TBI Survivor Beth Hudnall Stamm with service dog Sophie at White House
Beth spends her life finding space between the rock and the hard place. Since the 1970s she has worked with traumatic stress. Since the 1980s she has lived with a traumatic brain Injury.

Beth began working with traumatic stress in the 1970s when she and her husband were house parents for youth in child protective services. At that time she discovered the reality of child abuse. At the time we had no real idea how common child abuse and trauma were nor did we have any understanding of how helping those who had experienced sorrow and suffering affected affected us. Now we do understand.

Beth is a also traumatic brain injury survivor (TBI). She sustained her first TBI in 1986 and her second in 2004. She and her family live daily with the disability she acquired. Amid the challenges, they live joyfully and fully. Part of the pure fun in their lives comes from Beth's sometimes too perky, sometimes silly, sometimes serious service dog Sophie.

Beth holds degrees from Appalachian State University (BS, MA) and University of Wyoming (Ph.D.). She is a Research Professor at the Institute of Rural Health at Idaho State University. Her previous positions include the VA National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Dartmouth Medical School. Beth was a contributor to the development of the U.S. Army Medical Department “Provider Resiliency Training” program which uses the her measure of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, the ProQOLHer work is used in over 30 countries and diverse fields including health care, bioterrorism and disaster responding, news media, and the military. Beth makes her home in a log cabin in Idaho with her historian-husband and her service dog, Sophie.
